Family Service Canada gratefully acknowledges the generous funding of Human Resources and Social Development for the F&STPACE project.
Families & Schools Together: Parents and Computers for Employment (or F&STPACE) is a pilot project that resulted in a downloadable curriculum resource.
F&STPACE builds on the success of F&STWORKS, a national program in which whole families gather on a monthly basis and participate in activities aimed at strengthening families, empowering parents and building community. F&STPACE is a set of monthly sessions where parents are supported to be the best they can be by coming together for an evening of fun and educational activities based on a specially designed curriculum about computer and internet technologies.
The goal of the F&STPACE project is to engage parents, nurture skill development, connect them with local resources and show them what their neighbourhood has to offer in the way of technology.
During the evening workshops, parents acquire valuable skills by learning about topics such as computer basics, word processing, the Internet, e-mail, how to evaluate online content, media awareness and safe surfing. The program also addresses professional development needs by including sessions on resumé writing, career exploration and job searching and preparation.
The F&STPACE team is a collaborative group consisting of one parent coordinator, one agency representative to support the coordination, an instructor to teach the sessions and a variety of volunteers to help in the delivery of each session.
