National
Family Week© has been celebrated since 1985 when it was proclaimed
an official week by the Government of Canada. It is always the week
before Thanksgiving, which is a time of family togetherness.
This year, National Family Week© will take place from October 2 to 8, 2006. The theme is:
Nourishing the Family Tree
Recognizing that families are a fundamental source of nurture and support for individuals, this year’s theme calls on us to promote the optimal growing conditions for Canadian families. By fostering positive environments for family well-being, we can nourish and sustain the healthy growth and development of all members of society, so that everyone can achieve their full potential. It also reminds us of the importance of intergenerational relationships and the valuable role played by extended families. Through National Family Week© activities, family members will have the opportunity to explore their family histories and learn more about the qualities that make their own families unique and special. Healthy families are rooted in schools, workplaces and neighbourhoods and during National Family Week©, families will have an opportunity to draw on their strengths and direct them outwards for the betterment of the communities to which they belong.
Family Service Canada is pleased to welcome three new National Partners for National Family Week© 2006:
- Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
- First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada
- National Film Board of Canada
