Commemorative
medals are struck from time to time to mark important anniversaries and
other great occasions. In keeping with this tradition, the Golden Jubilee
Medal of Queen Elizabeth II commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of Her
Majesty's reign as Queen of Canada. The Medal will be awarded to over
46,000 Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow
citizens, their community or to Canada.
The medal carries a contemporary effigy of The Queen on the obverse. The reverse
features the design of a stylised maple leaf with CANADA at the bottom and
the years 1952 and 2002 on the left and right of the Royal Cypher and Crown.
The Medal is worn suspended from a broad royal blue ribbon, with red outer
stripes, double white stripes with a red central stripe. The design concept
of the medal was developed by the Chancellery of Honours. The effigy of the
Queen was designed by Canadian artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
Family Service Canada was given the privilege of nominating thirty people to receive the Commemorative Medal.
Former Board Chairs of Family Service Canada
Each of these people gave freely of their time, talents and efforts to assume
a leadership position for our national voluntary organization. They made
time to travel to various parts of Canada for Board governance meetings,
conferences and Annual General Meetings within their own busy professional
and personal lives. They promoted families and support services for families
in every way possible during their tenure on the Board of Directors (6 years).

Executive Directors of Family Service Agencies
Executive Directors of Family Service agencies, as part of the voluntary sector,
rarely receive public recognition for their service to their communities
and their dedication to their staff and the work of their organizations.
Their positions require skills and knowledge in all aspects of organizational
life - human resource management, strategic planning, volunteer recruitment
and retention, financial management, crisis management, social development
theory and therapeutic intervention. During the past 10 years, Executive
Directors of Family Service agencies in Canada have provided exemplary leadership
during a period of economic hardship and decreased financial resources from
all sources. Those nominated have all served for 8 years or more and have
also shared their expertise and knowledge on national Advisory committees
for a variety of Family Service Canada programs.

Community Leaders
Community leaders do lead by example, and the two recipients
recognized by Family Service Canada have created positive role models for
their respective communities.
- Lois Wey, Clinical Director, London ON, has served on Family
Service Canada's national committees and has demonstrated leadership
to her community in many ways, specifically through compassion and
expertise in Critical Incident Stress Debriefings as part of Employee
Assistance programs.
- Louise Hartley, Vice-President EAP, Toronto ON, has provided leadership and distinguished service to her colleagues, clients and community through her contribution to quality assurance of Employee Assistance programs in the Family Services network in Canada.
It is indeed a pleasure for Family Service Canada
to be able to honour these 30 people for their excellent contributions
to their organizations, their colleagues, their communities and,
most importantly, to families across Canada.
